Be aware of the differential diagnoses of an irregular pulse. To confirm a diagnosis of AF, arrange an electrocardiogram (ECG): If AF is present, the ECG will have no P-waves, a chaotic baseline, and an irregular ventricular rate. Results: Of 1295 participants with symptomatic AF, 957 (74%) reported triggers for episodes of AF. In comparison to participants without triggers and after multivariate adjustment, those reporting triggers had a 71% lower odds of congestive heart failure (odds ratio [OR] 0.29; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.14-0.60; P = .001) and a >2-fold greater odds of a family history of AF (OR 2.04; 95% CI 1.21-3.47; P = .008). 2005-07-11 · Paroxysmal AF is a common arrhythmia in the general practice setting, increasing with age and commonly associated with other heart diseases.

"Persistent," "longstanding persistent," and "permanent" are clinical labels used for the other types of AF. The latter are further divided into paroxysmal and the more sustained forms, that is, persistent and permanent AF. In paroxysmal AF, the main objective of management is the prevention of paroxysms and long‐term maintenance of sinus rhythm, as well as appropriate consideration of antithrombotic therapy. Paroxysmal AF is a periodic, irregular heartbeat that returns to normal after some time without any medical intervention. Essentially, it is occasional Afib with episodes that always last less than 7 days. The length of time that paroxysmal AFib occurs varies between patients and can be as short as a few seconds, or as long as seven days.

It often begins as short periods of abnormal beating, which become longer or continuous over time. In contrast to permanent atrial fibrillation (AF), it is unclear whether paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PxAF) is associated with increased mortality or not. In the few studies performed, the results have been conflicting.
